Sinopec Catalyst Company has announced that its newly developed automotive exhaust purification catalysts, independently developed to meet the most stringent "National VI-B" emission standards, have achieved full commercial supply.
According to an official announcement on February 20, 2024, from Sinopec's Research Institute of Petroleum Processing (RIPP), the independently developed National VI-B automotive exhaust catalyst system has passed the joint certification by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, officially obtaining market access qualification for road motor vehicle products and gaining full authorization for market sales and application.
The catalyst adopts the mainstream technical route of "TWC three-way catalysis + GPF particulate capture," and has undergone rigorous testing including over 1,000 hours of continuous high-temperature aging bench tests and full vehicle Type I tests. Its pollutant conversion efficiency fully meets the National VI-B standards and OEM engineering development margin requirements. The company has filed over 20 invention patent applications, with the entire technology process being fully independently controllable.
By optimizing the ratio of precious metal coatings and oxygen storage materials, the product has achieved a 40% improvement in pollutant conversion efficiency during low-temperature cold-start conditions, effectively supporting the green upgrading of China's automotive industry.
With the full nationwide implementation of the National VI-B emission standards in July 2023 and the domestic exhaust treatment catalyst market projected to reach RMB 24.206 billion in 2025, coupled with enhanced catalyst performance assessments in regions such as Shenzhen and Xiong'an, a solid demand foundation has been established for large-scale promotion. During 2024–2025, Sinopec completed the construction of catalyst production facilities and capacity ramp-up. Its hydrogenation catalysts (including exhaust purification catalysts) benefited from the National VI-B standards, with annual growth exceeding 10% in 2025. As of October 2025, the catalyst has achieved volume supply to major domestic automakers, while also entering the stock fuel vehicle exhaust treatment upgrade market, completing a full loop of "technology certification – capacity construction – market penetration."
For a long time, the domestic exhaust purification catalyst market has been dominated by foreign companies such as BASF and Johnson Matthey. The large-scale promotion of this product by Sinopec marks that domestically produced National VI-B catalysts have achieved performance parity with foreign products, accelerating the domestic substitution trend in the industry.
