Sinochem Group Releases "2026 White Paper on Green and Low-Carbon Development of Chemical Catalysts"

Sinochem Group has officially released an industry white paper summarizing the achievements of China's chemical catalyst sector in its green transformation over the past five months. The white paper emphasizes that non-toxic, non-hazardous, recyclable, and highly atom-economical green catalysts have become the absolute mainstay of industry investment. It also proposes, for the first time, a draft industry standard for carbon footprint accounting covering the entire lifecycle of catalysts.

The petrochemical industry is one of the pillar industries of the national economy, yet it is characterized by high energy and resource consumption, as well as significant "three wastes" (wastewater, waste gas, and solid waste) and carbon emissions. Therefore, accelerating the green and low-carbon transition is an inevitable requirement for achieving high-quality industrial development and building a strong petrochemical nation. This paper analyzes the fundamental situation of the green and low-carbon transition in the chemical and petrochemical industries from the perspectives of international consensus, domestic requirements, changes in raw materials, market constraints, technological evolution, and intelligent transformation. It reviews the current development status of China's chemical and petrochemical industries in terms of industrial scale, industrial structure, resource utilization, pollutant emissions, carbon emissions, and industrial technology, and further identifies the prominent issues currently constraining the green and low-carbon transition of China's chemical and petrochemical industries.

The study proposes key tasks for the green and low-carbon transition of China's chemical and petrochemical industries, including: green and low-carbon technology innovation projects, industrial structure green transformation projects, green and environmentally friendly product innovation projects, carbon peaking projects in key areas, energy-use green and low-carbon transformation projects, green and low-carbon clean production projects, digital and intelligent transformation projects, and green production benchmark leadership projects. These aim to achieve high-end industrial structures, low-carbon energy consumption, circular resource utilization, clean production processes, green product supply, and digitalized production methods. To this end, it is recommended to actively and steadily advance the "dual carbon" goals, achieve carbon peaking in different sub-sectors in a phased manner, steadily promote the green energy transition, and adopt proactive policies to drive the green and low-carbon transition, thereby effectively ensuring the green and low-carbon development of China's chemical and petrochemical industries.
